Sanam Luang (Phramen Ground)

Sanam Luang, which translates to “Royal Field,” is a large public square situated to the north of the Grand Palace. It serves as the venue for important royal events and cultural festivals. It is often used for royal processions, official ceremonies and celebrations during major Thai holidays, as well as live music events and exhibitions.

Sanam Luang is well-known for its long-standing tradition of kite flying. Especially during the windy months of February and March, you can often see colorful kites soaring high above the field, creating a vibrant and picturesque scene.

Visitors may also encounter religious and spiritual activities taking place. The open space is sometimes used for temporary pavilions during royal cremations or funerals of high-ranking monks. This underscores the space’s significance in Thai religious and cultural practices.

Beyond its historical and cultural significance, Sanam Luang offers a glimpse into the local way of life. You might find families picnicking, people flying kites, or locals practicing traditional activities. It’s a wonderful place to observe the daily rhythms of Bangkok residents.
