The statue is estimated to weigh around 5.5 tons, making it one of the largest solid gold statues in the world. Its origins are believed to date back to the 13th or 14th century, and it was once covered with stucco and plaster to conceal its true value.
The true identity of the statue was only discovered by accident in the 1950s. During some renovations, a portion of the stucco covering the Buddha’s surface chipped off, revealing the brilliant gold underneath. The revelation was a momentous event, and the statue has since become a symbol of spiritual devotion and national pride.
