Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha)

Wat Pho, also known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, is situated beside the Grand Palace. The temple is a haven of tranquility and has a rich history that dates back to the 16th century.

The highlight of Wat Pho is undoubtedly the awe-inspiring Reclining Buddha statue. This massive gold-plated statue measures an impressive 46 meters in length and 15 meters in height. As you walk into the temple hall, you’ll be mesmerized by the sheer size and intricate details of the statue. It is adorned with mother-of-pearl inlay on its eyes and feet, depicting 108 auspicious symbols. The statue shows the Buddha in a state of nirvana, or ultimate enlightenment, lying on his side with his right hand supporting his head.

Beyond the Reclining Buddha, Wat Pho boasts a sprawling temple complex that spans over 20 acres. As you explore the grounds, you’ll discover beautifully manicured gardens, numerous chapels, intricate statues, and serene courtyards. The architecture here is a blend of Thai and Chinese influences, showcasing colorful porcelain decorations, intricate murals, and ornate stupas (dome-shaped structures).

Wat Pho is also considered the birthplace of traditional Thai massage and herbal medicine. You can even sign up for a traditional Thai massage at the traditional medicine school within the temple grounds. It’s a unique opportunity to experience an authentic Thai massage in a historical setting.
