Wat Benchamabophit, commonly known as the Marble Temple, is a stunning and elegantly crafted Buddhist temple located near the Dusit Palace complex. It was constructed during the reign of King Rama V (King Chulalongkorn) in the late 19th century. The temple’s name, Benchamabophit Dusitvanaram, translates to “Monastery of the fifth King near Dusit Palace.”
The temple’s architecture is a fusion of Thai and European styles, creating a harmonious and unique design. The primary building material used is Carrara marble, which gives the temple its commonly used name, the Marble Temple. The pristine white marble exterior reflects light beautifully and imparts a sense of purity and tranquility.
The main ubosot (ordination hall) is the central focus of Wat Benchamabophit. Its symmetrical design and elegant proportions create a sense of balance and grace. The intricately carved wooden doors, gilded details, and elaborate decorations showcase the craftsmanship and attention to detail that characterize Thai temple artistry.
Inside the ubosot, the temple houses a highly revered and splendidly adorned bronze Buddha image known as Phra Buddha Chinnarat. This image is an important representation of the Buddha in the Subduing Mara posture, symbolizing the Buddha’s triumph over temptation and ignorance.
Surrounding the main hall is a cloistered gallery adorned with ornate murals depicting scenes from the life of the Buddha and various Buddhist teachings. The tranquil courtyard, with its well-tended gardens and reflecting pools, offers visitors a peaceful space for reflection and meditation. Take your time to explore the grounds and soak in the spiritual ambience.
